Instructions for download and installation of the software for the CIDER 2013 seismology tutorial, modified for the purposes of this tutorial from general instructions written by John Yu and Thorsten Becker. -Meredith Nettles, 2013/07/11 ================================================================ Download the virtual disk file from: http://gv2.usc.edu/ugesce/SEATREE64-2013.vdi.tgz or http://gv2.usc.edu/ugesce/SEATREE64-2013.zip and then unzip/untar the file as necessary; that is, gunzip or unzip, and then, if needed tar xvf SEATREE64-2013.vdi.tar You should end up with the file: SEATREE64-2013.vdi --- Installing the virtual Linux machine within VirtualBox --- - start VirtualBox - select "new" from menu - choose Linux-Fedora (64bit) as operating system, and use something like "SEATREE-2013" as a name - use default memory suggestions - select the radio button for "Use an existing virtual hard drive"; click the folder icon with the green symbol to the right of the drop-down menu; navigate to the .vdi file you downloaded, and select that file; then click "Create" - if this step is successful, your new Linux virtual machine should show within VirtualBox as "SEATREE-2013". --- Using the Linux machine (LOGIN) --- - Start the SEATREE-2013 virtual machine - If the machine is running, you should see a Fedora/Linux login screen with one user, the "Seatree User". Click on the user icon, and login User: seatreeuser Password: seatree - type "seatree" in the command window (or you can open it with the icon on the desktop) * For this tutorial: select "Larry - 2D Tomography 1.0" from the drop-down menu; we will also use the module "Syn2D - 2D Cartesian Tomography 1.1" --- Troubleshooting if your image will not boot --- - Make sure the visualization setting for you CPU is enable in your BIOS. - Make sure PAE/NX is enabled in VirtualBox [SEATREE IMAGE > SETTINGS > SYSTEM PROCESSOR
